Integrating Indigenous Equity into Climate Finance

CAFIID members and the wider community are welcome to our Climate Finance Community of Practice October session: Integrating Indigenous Equity into Climate Finance.

As climate finance continues to grow in order to fill the $5T climate funding gap, investors and allocators are called to ensure that capital addresses environmental imperatives in a manner that also advances equity and justice. Indigenous communities, in Canada and globally, bring essential knowledge systems, governance models, and leadership that are critical to achieving both climate and social outcomes. Yet, capital flows into Indigenous-led and community-driven solutions remain limited and uneven.

This panel will explore how investors are integrating Indigenous equity into their climate strategies, highlighting approaches that deliver both financial performance and lasting community value. Speakers will examine practical methods for embedding Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and safeguards into all investment processes, not just dedicated Indigenous strategies. They will share lessons on what makes various approaches and mechanisms scalable and impactful while providing real-world examples.

Importantly, the discussion will emphasize how moving beyond Western finance frameworks to embrace Indigenous governance and knowledge systems can reshape climate investing for integrity and effectiveness.
