What impact has your recent work led to that you are most proud of?
Corporate Green, Blue and Gender Bond Capacity Building in Asia
Recently, Climate Finance Advisors conducted an in-depth gap analysis, recommendations report, and capacity building workshop for the issuance of corporate green, blue and gender bonds in an Asian country as part of the support programme of the EU Green Recovery Facility. The aim was to determine the policy and institutional requirements, incentives and ecosystem adaptation required to create a favourable environment to catalyze the issuance of corporate green, blue and gender bonds as a tool to meet the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). According to The International Monetary Fund, around $1.1 trillion annually is needed for developing countries in Asia to fill the climate adaptation and mitigation finance gap. This project has kickstarted the green bond market in the country as a mechanism to identify and fund critical environmental projects in the most efficient and effective manner. Green bond markets globally offer project developers reduced cost of capital to fund critical projects while assuring investors that their capital is being deployed in alignment with climate goals. The project integrated a gender-lens to green bond issuance to ensure women-owned enterprises and projects are supported in an effort to advance economic equity and equality.
Sustainable Investing
Through a data-driven approach, the team has supported a number of financial institutions in measuring their investment portfolio financed emissions and in implementing detailed decarbonization strategies through the creation of protocols and recommendations to identify climate-related investment opportunities and assess their risk and return profiles, effectively creating and measuring the portfolio against an impact-adjusted Sharpe Ratio. Through its sustainable investing services, CF Advisors advocates for the use of thematic transactions to drive awareness and capital towards critical themes such as nature-based solutions.
What challenges and barriers are you working on addressing?
A recent study by the Climate Policy Initiative has identified that we need to spend US$7.4 trillion per year globally through 2030 to fill the climate finance funding gap. As a purpose-driven organization, we support financial organization in structuring an efficient allocation of capital in the context of climate change and sustainability factors. We address this funding gap by supporting the integration of climate change into financial decision making to enable financial institutions to avoid uncompensated risks while positioning for emerging opportunities to create value over the long-term. Specifically, we support our clients in identifying opportunities ranging from climate mitigation (clean technology, innovation, socioeconomic prosperity, etc.) to climate adaptation (nature-based solutions, infrastructure, ocean and blue economy, etc.) as well as mitigating risks (physical, transition, stranded asset, etc.).
What is your call to action for our membership?
One of our favourite quotes by Peter Druker: The best way to predict the future is to create it. This is our modus operandi – how can we take agency in unlocking the power of an investment portfolio to build more just, resilient and equitable communities by adapting traditional portfolio models and integrating emerging and modern financial techniques to drive portfolio performance, grow AUM, and minimize risks. Our call to action is to mainstream sustainability, impact and climate finance so that it is one day just referred to as ‘finance’.
What are you looking forward to in the coming months?
We are looking forward to continuing to watch this area bloom and blossom, in time for the changing seasons. Climate finance is about directing capital to fund real and global challenges in a manner that rewards swift and broad action, builds common prosperity, and safeguards our home and our people. In this vein, in the coming months, Climate Finance Advisors will be continuing to support financial institutions, both locally and internationally, in refreshing impact mandates, measuring financed emissions and implementing decarbonization and sustainability strategies, and preparing financial institutions for the upcoming reporting season.
